Finally, we will be able to hold our Run to “Joadja”, which is a historic site 25km (30 mins) west of Mittagong. In the past, there was a township of Joadja. The town existed to mine oil shale, from which kerosene was extracted. The township and cottages have been empty for many years and the present owners of the area have restored some of the cottages, etc. The old township is some distance from the present Joadja Homestead area.
At 9:00am, meet at Mittagong Information Centre (Old Hume Highway) for 9:30am departure for the 30 minute drive to Joadja. There are two sections of unsealed road to traverse but, it is good, graded unsealed road. Firstly, a main road section of graded road which leads to a sealed section of curved, downhill road. The final, short section, is a graded single lane driveway into Joadja car park. Many car clubs have visited Joadja and the road has not been an issue.
We will have a relaxing morning tea at Joadja. Either BYO or buy at the Kiosk -Tea/Coffee/Hot Water and cake available.
There is limited food at the kiosk so it is recommended we bring our own food. The kiosk is fully licenced so no BYO alcohol! There are modern facilities available here. As this will be an “open day” at Joadja, there may be other visitors joining the tour.
At 11:00am, we will have a 90 min, fully guided tour of the Historic Joadja Town on purpose built tractor-trollies (seats 60) including a commentary on the area and its history.
Also, a tour (and tasting) of the Joadja Distillery, where we are shown how to make Single Malt Whisky, Rum, Brandy, Gin, Vodka and more! (optional)
Cost $25 per/person, pay on day – need to be there by 10:30 for ticket purchase, etc.
When we return to the homestead area (around 12:30pm) we will be able to enjoy the peaceful countryside, have our picnic lunch under the shady trees (bring a chair) or on the verandah.
Driving Directions from Mittagong Information Centre to Joadja Carpark have been emailed to all members.
