SUNDAY, 19 AUGUST, 2018 MAHRATTA HOUSE, 25 Fox Valley Road, Wahroonga 9489 7925 E:firstname.lastname@example.org. Open 10:00 – 4:00
The property includes one of the finest war time Art Deco mansions in Sydney (acknowledged as an Art Deco icon), along with its delightful Paul Sorensen garden. Listed with the Heritage Council of NSW since 1989, Mahratta represents perhaps the last major Sydney estate of its kind and is arguably the finest remaining example of Sorensen’s brilliance in the metropolitan area.
Built in 1932, the name is a combination of two words, maha and ratta which together mean “The Great Kingdom”. In 1989 Mahratta was acquired by the School of Philosophy who are the current custodians of this remarkable property. The theatrical charm and drama of the house is evident in the lavish entrance & main hall which feature a curved staircase and curved walls, branching out into two wings. East wing contains kitchen, staff area, dining room, ballroom and sundecks. West wing includes the sunroom, library, music room, loggia and sleeping quarters. The first floor features two remarkable, original marble bathrooms.
